SEPTEMBER 1ST 2022 APBA NEWSLETTER Northern Virginia APBA Baseball League
COMMISSIONERS CORNER
The season enters its stretch run with DEL and PGH in the top spots, and STO and SEA competing for the right to draft Christian Bethancourt first. Bethancourt, the former Druid, is now playing for Tampa, after San Diego's failed experiment to convert him to RP. SD proved that just because you can throw hard doesn't mean you can pitch in the MLB if you can't command the pitch. But as a catcher this year he's thrown out 42% of baserunners and delivered several scoreless relief innings. Sounds like a perfect addition to Chad's team.
DEL is riding his starting pitching and sneaky-good offense to a potential playoff bye. he picked up some much-needed relief innings before the deadline, averting a bullpen crisis. PGH has been quiet lately, until they took 3 of 4 from surging STE, who were coming off a 45 run series against STO. That series win gave PGH the best record in the league.
But don't sleep on Larry (really, don't. He's very lumpy.) He's lurking in second place in the Piedmont and traded for Muncy and Lynn, both very good cards for a playoff team. The other second place team, GRT, has an even better record than Larry this year, but Chris swears this isn't his year. Anyone who has 6 plaques like Larry is deserving our scrutiny, 4th place overall notwithstanding.
In the MLB Aaron judge has 50 homeruns with a month left to play. Sounds like a lock for 3 1's. I may not have 3 1's on my whole team next year. But I will have some decent batting averages, unlike this year.
Finally, the games played deadline for the end of the month is 76. Everyone is pretty close, so I expect all of us to make it.
The season ends at the end of the day on the 3rd Sunday in October, which is the 16th this year. No excuses. If you think you'll need help to finish the year, don't wait until the last minute to ask for that help.
Play hard, have fun!
Dwight
