JULY 2022 APBA NEWSLETTER Northern Virginia APBA Baseball League
After 3 months of play the league has divided like an amoeba, with 7 teams above .500, 4 teams in the hunt for the Hamner, and one (ROS) in no-man's land. Trades followed this template, with the have-nots moving pieces to the above .500 teams as both groups position themselves for more desirable outcomes. I like GRT trading for Crone-zone and DEL getting another useful starter. Both teams slipped from first and these trades should help, though ARL made a trade of their own to try and maintain separation. PGH was silent, alone among the leaders in standing pat, though they have time to make deals.
Down in the basement with STO (the name of my podcast) , ALI, The King of Tanking SEA,, and shocking STE, it is a total toss-up on who gets the #1. We've been seeing a surprising surge in offense by STO. We bombed poor Bob and ROS for 34 runs last meeting. That is not the STO way. If we go back to our normal 8-12 runs per series we can be in the mix for the #1. If not, It looks like SEA all the way. Who will Chad take? No Mike Trout's this year.
Everybody made their 40 games played, that's very good. The next check-point is 60 games at the end of August. That can be an issue as a lot of guys slow down in the summer. Keep up with your games played because the deadline after 8/31 is 9/30 with 16 more games needing to be played for a total of 76.
Turning to the MLB, this week teams will pass the half-way mark in games played. There are only 4 guys left with OPS over 1000, including former Druid Paul Goldschmidt, now of the ancient rivals DEL. Tony Gonsolin leads the majors in ERA at an astonishing 1.58, or about a 22 in our league. Gonsolin is the property of WRC.
Have a happy 4th!
Dwight Hamner
