AUGUST 1, 2022 APBA NEWSLETTER Northern Virginia APBA Baseball League
COMMISSIONERS CORNER
This is one of those days when professional political consultants sweat over their approach: is deadline day in the MLB more important than NVABL news? Which should go first?
Well, I'm not James Carville so here goes:
Lots of good trades in MLB over the last few days, with the Soto deal to SD almost done, but not quite. Imagine Soto and Tatis in the postseason lineup, without the Hosmer boat anchor. The SD rotation is tremendous, and that alone might make them favorites to face the Yankees in October. Especially since the Dodgers did virtually nothing to shore up their leaky bullpen and their weak hitting LF/CF starters.
I say the Yankees because I don't believe Houston did enough in getting Mancini to replace Gurriel to get by the Yankees this year. True, if Mancini were playing in Houston instead of the revamped Camden he'd have 5 more HR's, but how many runs would he have cost the team with his glove if he plays 1B instead of Gurriel?
What will Montas bring to the Yankees? He's been good against Houston (2.20 this year) but how much of that was at the Mausoleum,, a more favorable pitcher's park than NY? I'm sure the Yankees vast analytics dept. has the answer, and they didn't pay much for him, so my guess is that he's a marginal improvement over somebody who will now be the swing man in the bullpen. Montas should slot in 4th in the Yankees rotation.
In our league both ends of the race are clarifying. At the bottom, where my Druids dwell, Chad was sitting pretty until he took 3 from ARL. Now he has a squeaky thin lead over me for the first pick in the draft, rumored to be Pirates SS Pablo "Watcha Gonna Do" Cruz. At the other end, Steve took on a lot of water going 1-7 vs Chad and Geo and dropping out of first as a result. Unlikely DEL and PGH are the division leaders, but questions remain. Can Walt surge enough to bump someone from the playoffs? Will Larry's trades result in another Miracle in Gaithersburg?
Our season is becoming very interesting.
Play hard, have fun.
